Sarah O’Connor’s The Craftie Studio

It is always a pleasure to feature artists, not just because it gives me more images to work with, but also because art is such a universal language. That is why I am thrilled to introduce you to Sarah O’Conner, a talented painter, illustrator, and designer who’s artwork speaks to everyone in their own way.

In a few sentences, what is your business?

I’m an artist that loves to create! I love using all sorts of mediums ranging from watercolor, ink, fiber arts to mixed media. I’m an artist that likes to not waste any of my materials and to use the leftovers in a resourceful way.

What is your typical work environment?

I tend to work in my bedroom/art studio along with local tea & coffee shops.

Tell us about the the training or education that is required for this type of business is.

I got my BFA in illustration at Laguna College of Art and Design.

What does it mean to you to be part of the gig economy?

To spread the word and get my name out there. I’d love to share my work along with meet new artists.

What are the benefits of your type of work?

I feel that using watercolor, typically a difficult to many kind of medium, it teaches me to be confident with my mark making.

What are some of the difficulties that you encountered starting a business?

Knowing what is popular and trendy. Also known g what particular types of packaging to buy for selling and mailing.

How do you use/leverage social media?

I post events promotion fliers on my stories. Along with showing my process work of my current work.

How do you integrate technology into your business?

I use social media and my phone to document my work, process and materials. People, from what I’ve seen love process work along with asmr tape pulling videos

What does “Making it” and “success” mean to you?

It would help with promoting myself, gaining more freelance work, job experience and job opportunities.

How do you balance work and personal time?

I tend to create to do lists to break down how much time I spend on each task. My calendar planner is my aid to all that I do.

How did the pandemic impact your business?

Slowing down possible freelance and promoting my work

How does diversity impact your business?

It helps me understand all spectrums off interest. I like to create works that interest most if not all people.

What do you see as the future for your business and/or the gig economy?

Goals would be an artist that people seek out to create work for their home, events, gifts and more. I’d love to gain more work experience and be apart of a creative team/company

What is one more piece of useful advice that you would give to others?

Do what you love and don’t have anyone tell you otherwise
