Summer Leigh and Trailer Treats
Summer has only been in business for a little over a year, but already, she’s well on her way to building a successful business. You can typically spot her booth right away because of her distinctive blue and white trailer. When you see it, you should make a beeline over there for some delicious treats.
Can you describe what your business does?
I am a licensed home baker and I really enjoy what I do. I mean, who doesn't like Treats? There's always a large variety so hopefully, there’s something for everyone. It's such a pleasure meeting new people, seeing their smiles, and getting amazing feedback on how much they enjoyed the baked items they chose.
Where did the idea come from?
I've always enjoyed cooking and baking so this was a kind of natural step for me. After 30 successful years in education and training, I became disabled, but couldn't let that get me down. Being someone who enjoys working, I knew I had to try and do something I enjoy and to keep busy. I'm having so much fun coming up with new items to bake and to provide these items for people to enjoy.
It really happened and grew so quickly. Trailer Treats started just over a year ago. Since then, I've done weddings, parties of all types, holiday orders, and some large well-known company orders, too. I do custom orders and can add photos or company logos to baked items, so it's been a big hit. I really enjoy meeting people, having great conversations, and gaining regular customers that I have the pleasure of seeing often.
Can you describe your typical work day?
I am licensed to bake from home, which is really nice. My days consist of planning the items I will prepare for specific events that are coming up. Weddings, Farmers Markets, corporate events, or working on orders. I named my business Trailer Treats because I use my mini trailer to work the events most of the time. It really is an eye-catcher and just a fun way to transport and sell items. I stay local mostly but I do ship orders as needed.
What is your best-selling product?
I started with making Cake Pucks, which is always a good seller but I feel like the Chocolate Chip Cookies are a favorite. The S'more Cookies and Mini Cakes are very popular as well. I change the items regularly to keep up with the holidays and to provide something new that people may not have ever tried or haven't had in a while.
Also, the Marshmallow Krispie Treats are a hit with adults... They all just make people happy and I like that. Online orders, in-person purchases, and porch pick-ups have really worked out as well.
What sets you apart from other businesses?
I think what sets Trailer Treats apart from other bakers is of course the trailer but also the good quality and great taste that I always try to offer in any baked goods I make. The variety and ability to customize orders from us is a plus. Everything I offer is mini just as my trailer is, so it’s just a perfect amount of sweetness. I also try to really connect with my customers... that's what I enjoy the most.
How is social media important to your business?
Social media for me is a bit of a challenge because I'm still learning the ins and outs of it all. I need to be better about posting photos and videos as I do feel it's important to be seen regularly on social media. This is something I plan to work on this year.
Regarding all the work that the business requires, do you hire contractors or does your family participate?
I have to admit it's a lot of work. It doesn't end with completing the baking. There's clean up, delivery, events to work, inventory, bookkeeping, label making, new-item state approvals, the website, emails, and the scheduling of new events. I'm a one-woman business and I have had to learn to balance work life and personal life, so it is a work in process. I am so blessed to have some help at events from family as I need it.
For finding new customers, doing outreach, and marketing, how do you manage this?
Instagram seems to work well for me. Customers follow me and we stay somewhat connected. I use it to keep people in the know of where I'll be each weekend as well as all the other events that I do.
Practically speaking, how do you balance work, growth, and personal time?
In the beginning, I was working for the business 7 days per week. I couldn't stop and was having to learn all there is to know about business law, fees, etc. I'm still learning but finding life balance is so important for my health and to be able to provide quality items.
What do you see as the outlook for the future of your business?
The sky's the limit, I say. Trailer Treats has grown immensely over the past year. I hope to have my regular monthly events and private orders ongoing.
Do you have a final thought for the readers?
I truly believe a positive attitude and a good outlook are so important in business and life. Kindness is a must. Putting those things together equals success for everyone, in my opinion.
