Why Did We Create the Gig-Zine?
“Ninety-four percent of the new jobs created in the U.S. are gig, temporary, or contractor jobs at this point”
From the article: “The Pull of Andrew Yang’s pessimism,” The Atlantic, August 15, 2019
Who are gig workers? Just Uber and Postmates drivers? Hardly. Gig workers are also home-based businesses, startups, micro-businesses, artists, fitness gurus, adjunct faculty, content creators, musicians, side-hustlers, mom & pop shops, life-coaches, Etsy/eBay shop owners, and yes, also many delivery drivers. They are all part of the gig economy, and according to Andrew Yang, former presidential candidate and successful entrepreneur, they represent over 90% of the labor force.
What all these workers have in common is that this work is not their 9-5 job with medical benefits, a pension, or a retirement investment plan. It also typically doesn’t include a commute to a large office building, a manager looking over their shoulder, or a set schedule with a break for lunch in between. For gig workers, all those things are typically their own responsibility.
That is the gig economy.
The Gig-Zine, aka, the Gig Economy Magazine, is a blog and newsletter that tries to understand the gig economy. It does this by sharing stories of success in the gig economy. The intent is that by sharing our stories we can all learn from them and find success ourselves.
We can do this because all the articles here are written by gig workers. That’s right, we are a community of business owners ourselves - we write about what worked for us and we give you the inside scoop. It is an honest and free sharing of what it takes to make it. Oh yes, and we do this without pesky ads, sales-funnels, upsells, and memberships.
We believe that every business, however small, is a success story in the making. You never know which one of us might just become the next Michael Dell. Yes, the billionaire owner of Dell Corporation started his company out of his dorm room in college - he was a gig worker just like you!
So, if you are also a small business owner looking to make it, then poke around the site. We’re sure you’ll find something that will be of interest. Also, if you want to become part of the community, there are many ways you can contribute, just click here to get involved (and yes, it’s completely free).
